General information you need to know about buying from us.

Who is OzzieDust?

I am Sharyn Le Page. I am the founder of OzzieDust starting back in 2008 as a registered breeder with Dogs Queensland my member number is 41000098033, this is also my Queensland BIN number.

I got into breeding pedigree dogs as I had my first non pedigree litter back in 2007 and someone came to look at my pups and asked are you registered with Dogs Queensland? The answer was NO. So I was asking her all the questions and that started my mission, on the road to becoming a pedigree breeder. First I found Benson a beautiful Red and White boy, this is where some of the height comes from that you see in the pups and then I found Chelsea a Blue Merle girl, this is where the merle comes from in the OzzieDust lines. When I started we only had access to 3 genetic diseases that we could test for and they were NCL, CEA & TNS, and there was no trait tests available it is amazing how far everything has come,  as now we can test for 13 genetic diseases, some are still only research and it can be confusing some people so best to talk to me about this as it is all very interesting. About 2 years into breeding I dipped my toes into the show ring but it just wasn't suitable for me as I had a foster child in my care with very high needs and autism and it didn't go well when I would go into the show ring, so that was very short lived. These days I let other people put my dogs into the show ring even if they are coloured.

About 5 years into breeding I met Christine from Louanneley Border Collies because she was selling horses and when she realised I have and breed Border Collies we became great friends and they say the rest is history. I have watched her daughter's grow and develop in to beautiful young women, they have a keen interest in the dogs as well. Christine has been breeding under the Ozziedust umbrella for about 8 years and we still are doing breeding together but she has her own prefix now.

In 2022 I let a dream come true for myself and I imported from overseas It was a long process but worth it. I found a beautiful breeder in Spain and then I just has to wait for him to be born and then came Rio, I got to watch him grow with photos and videos. When Rio was about 4 months old I was offered Shadow and I said why not. I have a joke Rio was the plan Shadow was the impulse buy. It was a long journey but worth it all the way and now I am sharing my own little achievement with other breeders associated with Dogs Australia. At this stage nothing will be going over to MDBA until I have my lines with Rio and Shadow well established, I hope people can understand this.

I breed for temperament, structure with a pop of colour. Going into to the future I want to keep on achieving improving my dogs structure and temperament and don't lose what I have and bring new traits in.

Choosing the right Breeder for you!

Buyer Etiquette

With all the different breed associations out there, it can be very confusing when it comes to picking your new family member from a reputable breeder.

I have been a registered Border Collie breeder since 2008. A lot of things have changed in this time.

I am registered with the Dogs Australia (ANKC) with my sub-branch being Dogs Queensland as I live in Queensland. What does this mean? Our pedigrees are backed up by the FCI which is “The Federation Cynologique Internationale” for pedigree dogs worldwide. I can only breed from these registered dogs - if a dog does not have this registration, we cannot breed from them.

Click on the below links to read more about the above…

"The Federation Cynologique Internationale"

"Dogs Queensland"

On the Dogs Queensland site you will find information on breed associations in each state and territory.

What do you get from a registered breeder?

We have breed ethics and rules and regulations that we abide by. If we fail to follow the rules, we could be fined or suspended and not allowed to breed.

We DNA test all of our dogs as every dog carries genetic diseases; so we want to make sure we are breeding from the best quality we can and I personally only choose genetically clear dogs and I won’t breed from a carrier. This is my personal preference.

You also receive pedigree papers with 3 generations shown, so you can see who their family is.

With having a registered dog you can show, participate in dog sports and their achievements will be recorded to go towards their title.

This next one confuses everyone!

What is a BIN?

It is the state government issued Breeders Identification Number (BIN). Every state now has this in place; it is there to help the government manage puppy farms and over-breeding to ensure breeders are doing the right thing by the dog.

Our BIN is our Dogs Queensland member number:  Ours is 4100098033 - this only goes for Dogs Queensland members; no other breed association has this agreement with the QLD government. Other states and territories don’t have the same, so you still have to research for Dogs Australia breeders, and the best way to find these breeders is on the Dogs Queensland website.

https://dogsqueensland.org.au/

Anyone can go online and apply for a BIN - does that mean they are registered breeders?.. NO, but a lot of people do consider themselves to be a registered breeder with this number. Are the non registered breeders getting better? Yes some of them are as they are now doing the DNA testing. But do they know 100% on where their dogs have come from? No as they dont have pedigrees to show for those puppies. Some of them will charge the same amount I charge for mine so you really have to ask yourself, What are you paying for?

Another breed association that you will find is Master Dog Breeders Association (MDBA). From my understanding they are their own association and have nothing to do with the Dogs Australia or the FCI. They do produce papers for their dogs which have come from Dogs Australia dogs, but MDBA papered dogs are not recognised within the Dogs Australia register. There are quite a few  breeders have changed over to MDBA and some breeders are members of both.

Be happy with your choice of breeder!

Buyer Etiquette

Committed to Excellence

When looking for a puppy, stop looking for a puppy and find a reputable breeder! Find the right breeder and they will have the right pup for you! You might have to wait and be patient, but that is ok.

When you contact the breeder, give them a call and send them an email, introduce yourself thoroughly. Do not just send them a message asking how much or when your litter is due next. I just look at these emails and do not even want to bother replying, but I do. I have been doing this for 17 years and I can tell who is serious and who isn’t, and it is really nice to get an email from someone who has thought about it and introduced themselves to me. This will let me know you are serious about getting, and waiting, for a puppy.

I understand a lot of people will go on multiple lists with different breeders. Personally do not like it when people go on multiple breeders list as you are wasting my time the other breeders time and your time. Another thing people do is keep looking and don't bother to tell us they have found a puppy until we message them to say they are here and then we got told. There is a lot of work that goes into putting people on a waiting list.  We do know other breeders and we do talk to each other, so we know what goes on around us. So try and be on one list or be honest with us and let us know you are on another wait list. If people tell me if they are on another list i will tell them to stick with that breeder, then I am not wasting my time to try and get a puppy for you.

I prefer a phone call over all as i know you are serious about getting a puppy. If you sent me a email or text message

I will respond quickly and I will get you to call me or I will call you.

Questions to ask:

  • Are you a registered breeder?

If yes, you ask the next question…

  • What association are you with?

Ideally you want ANKC. In some states they will have 2 numbers;

their ANKC number and a BIN Just remember that someone with only a government issued BIN is not a registered breeder.

  • Do your dog’s come with pedigree papers?

A lot of people do not understand about pedigree papers and they say

“I only want a pet, I do not need the papers.” They will ask how much without papers?

My answer is all my dogs come with pedigree papers as they show the parentage of your puppy. The price is no different and it is one of the rules with Dogs QLD that all living pups are to be registered.

If the answer is NO, they could say “but the parents have pedigree papers, but the pups do not come with papers.” Does that mean they are pedigree… NO.

  • Do you get your dog DNA tested for genetic diseases?

With any ANKC breeder the answer would be YES.

  • Do you worm your puppies from 2 weeks of age?

If the answer is NO, this can be a big problem down the track.

  • Are your puppies vaccinated and microchipped?

With ANKC breeders their answer will be YES, and I have been doing this since I started breeding in 2008.

If you’re looking at other breeders, as I don't have what you are after and you don't want to wait and keep looking and you come across a breeder you are unsure of I will be happy to help with any questions you have about them. I’m always happy to help, as I understand I cannot always meet everyone's requirements when it comes to looking for your new family member.
